Cops catch alleged sugar cane thieves in Glen Austin

GLEN AUSTIN – Midrand police arrested two suspects for allegedly stealing sugar cane from a plot in Glen Austin.


Police arrested a suspect for theft of sugar cane in Glen Austin on 19 March.

Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station, Sergeant Matome Tlamela, said the police were alerted of the theft by a gardener on a plot in Glen Austin. Tlamela said that the gardener assists their employer with sugar cane and other vegetables.

The gardener saw four suspects chopping down sugar cane on the plot. When he approached the suspects, he demanded they stop when one of the suspects allegedly pulled out a knife and threatened him.

Tlamela said that they tied the cane with rope and made their way off the plot. The gardener alerted his employer, and the two followed the suspects to Pretorius Street in Glen Austin where they were allegedly selling the sugar cane.

The police were alerted and made their way to the scene.

Upon the police’s arrival, two suspects were arrested while the two others fled the scene.

The two arrested suspects were detained and charged with theft.
