Christ Church Prep embraces e-learning during national lockdown period

NOORDWYK – The Christ Church Preparatory School and College have set up learning for their students during the lockdown.

Christ Church Preparatory School and College have taken on e-learning to assist their learners during the coronavirus lockdown.

Marketing manager at the school Dawn Schmitz said, “In the school environment, it is essential that a certain number of days, during an annual cycle, are used for education, and we felt that moving the holidays to an earlier date would give us, as a school, time to place all necessary e-learning requirements in place.

“Now, with the countrywide lockdown in place, we will still ‘re-open’ on 14 April, fully online.

“To this end, we are in contact with our parents via email, informing them of the various platforms where schoolwork will be available.”

Principal of the school David Bell said, “We are encouraging our parents to follow their children’s school timetable during the course of the day. This is to try and create some normality in the children’s lives.

“Along with the basic subject requirements, this will include physical education, bible study, music and art, as well as extracurricular activities.”

Under the guidance of deputy principal of academics, Jaco van der Merwe, the school has created a YouTube channel for both college and preparatory school which allows the staff to publish videos and recordings of lessons to be covered.

Schmitz said, “Worksheets on the various lessons will be emailed to our parents for pupils to complete. We are ensuring that content is being selected from the various curricula that is easier for an e-learning environment and our parents.”

In the younger grades, the school is making use of PurpleMash, an electronic teaching tool.

Schmitz concluded, “Each of our pupils in the prep school has their own log on [details] and various reading and creativity tasks are being given to parents.”
