Ivory Park Police make two arrests for armed robbery

IVORY PARK – Two men aged 40 and 41 were apparently beaten by community members before police arrested them.


Two men were arrested on 8 March for a house robbery they allegedly committed last year in Clayville Ext 45 in Olifantsfontein.

According to the Ivory Park Police Station spokesperson, Captain Bernard Matimulane, the two suspects, aged 40 and 41 from Tembisa, allegedly robbed five people at gunpoint. “During the robbery, which took place in May, the suspects took a plasma television, cell phones, and a laptop.”

He explained that one of the victims in the group recognised the two suspects as one of them is his cousin. According to the victim, the two suspects had paid him a visit two days prior to the house robbery. “The two men were arrested after the victim saw them at a park in Ivory Park Ext 7…The victim called on community members for assistance, the duo was apprehended and, unfortunately, badly assaulted in the process before the police were called and rescued them.”

Matimulane added that the suspects were admitted to hospital and their docket was placed before the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court on 10 March in their absence.

Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, Ivory Park Police Station Commander welcomed the arrest. “We welcome the fact that as soon as the victim saw the suspects, he called for the necessary assistance from the fellow community members, who also rose to the occasion. We are, however, saddened by the fact that the suspects were badly assaulted in the process.”

Ngcobo called on the community to continue working closely with the police in maintaining law and order by joining the existing structures such as the community policing forum. “Anyone interested in knowing how these structures work may visit the Ivory Park Police Station or call 011 990 9600.”
