Displaced people to be housed at schools during Covid-19 lockdown

JOBURG – Displaced people in Gauteng will not be left in the cold as the 21-day lockdown begins at midnight on 26 March.

Johannesburg has a number of displaced people but with the national shutdown starting from tonight (26 March) at midnight, many may be left stranded, putting them at risk.

Fortunately, 30 schools with hostel facilities have been identified in Gauteng to help keep displaced people safe during the 21-day lockdown.

Queens High School, King Edward VII Preparatory School, Jeppe High School for Boys and the Parktown Boys’ High School will be used to house displaced people from Midrand, Sandton, Brixton, Auckland Park, Rosebank, Hyde Park and Johannesburg CBD amongst other areas.

Acting Gauteng MEC of Social Development Panyaza Lesufi is expected to allocate the displaced people to the schools today (26 March) just before the lockdown.

Lesufi added that the displaced people will be given a month’s supply of food as 35 food distribution centres have been identified.
