Young scientists empowered at Eskom Joburg workshop

JEPPESTOWN – The workshop was conducted by academics and professors in the field of science.

Eskom Expo for Young Scientists in the Johannesburg region hosted a workshop for teachers and learners with the aim of enhancing the scientific skills of promising young researchers.

Held at Jeppe High School for Boys in Jeppestown, about 173 learners in grades 6 to 12 from various local schools attended. The schools included Jeppe Boys, Jeppe Girls, Kensington Secondary, Primrose High, St Andrews School for Girls, Phumula Gardens, Zakariyya Park, King Edward VIII, St Endas, Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg, Parktown High, Curro Academy Savanna, Curro Academy Riverside, Curro Waterfall and Summerhill schools.

According to Eskom Expo Johannesburg regional science fair director, Jane Wasonga, the objective of the workshop was to have learners interact with actual researchers in order to inspire them to develop their own scientific ideas.

Wasonga said the ideas will then be presented as an Eskom Expo science project in district- and regional expos to be held soon. “At the workshop, learners had the opportunity to delve into topics based on the 13 Eskom Expo categories, in order to conduct research or expand on existing research plans,” said Wasonga.

“Some learners had chosen research topics already and required a starting point to kick off their research projects.”

Guest speakers included Akash Makhan from Eskom, Professor Jan Kruger from the Graduate School of Business Leadership and Eskom Expo Gauteng provincial coordinator Raven Motsewabangwe.

They provided practical learning on innovation, science and engineering projects, choosing projects and getting started, the abstract, the scientific method, engineering goals, reporting and developing project posters, which added fun and excitement to the workshop.
