VOX POPS: Community members share whether or not they are scared of coronavirus

JOHANNESBURG – The fear of coronavirus seems to be a fair split in people saying they are afraid of the virus which is taking the world by storm.

The widely discussed COVID-19, known more as coronavirus made its way to South Africa from someone who visited Italy and returned with the disease.

The Midrand Reporter took to the streets to ask people if they are scared of what is to come. Here is what some people had to say.

NHLONIPHO ZONDI: Not necessarily. All these viruses come and go. When HIV and Ebola came, we panicked and now we’ve forgotten about them. Flu doesn’t have a cure, and we just treat the symptoms.
PRECIOUS JELE: I’m scared. But whether you’re scared or not, it’s there. The effect is so dangerous since you just need to be near someone to get affected. With no cure for it, you die.
MATT RICHARDSON: No, I’m not afraid. If it hits us, it hits us and we’ll deal with it because we’re strong as a nation, but don’t hide in fear.
SIOBHON NAIDOO: No. I’ve been taking the necessary precautions to avoid that situation. We just know we have to be cleanly, and ten times more cleanly than normally would be. I’m not too fazed.
BASHAARAT TATCHELL: Yes, I am very scared because it’s a deadly virus. Who isn’t scared of this virus in the country? I’m very scared.
RUDI SMITH: Yes, I am afraid. We’ve been hearing about all these and I don’t want to die like now. So I’ve been washing my hands a lot more often.
