Summerhill charity club gives back

MIDRAND – The Summerhill Preparatory School and College charity club gave back through their Tembisa Project.

The Summerhill Preparatory School and College charity club gave their time and effort once again to assist the community on 27 February.

Head of the charity club, Siya Dube, said that the club began five years ago with their primary initiative being their Tembisa Project. The project initially saw the club develop a relationship with Nokuphila School, a Tembisa school which is run by non-profit organisation Love Trust who strive to give children in the Tembisa and Ivory Park area a strong education. Later on, Takalang Creche was also added to the project.

Dube said that the project revolves around the club making sandwiches for the kids at the schools and spending time with them through play. The club visits schools every two weeks. “Sometimes we go read to the children and hand out sandwiches. Our aim is to bring kindness and help the children who come from a very hard environment.

“They need love and I think its good when someone from the outsides come in to share some happiness.

“The project is also good for our students so they can see how others grow up which is very different. Its helps them grow.”

The club wishes to expand and is always looking for partnerships to spread their reach. The Summerhill’s charity club gets involved in various initiatives, including Nelson Mandela Day and Purple Day, but would like to partner with any other organisations in the Midrand area. For more information, contact the school at 011 468 1414.
