Midrand Community Policing Forum and Sector Crime Forum including stakeholders sat for a meeting to discuss new ways to reduce crime in the community.

The Midrand Community Policing Forum held their first meeting for the year on 17 February at the Midrand Police Station, with the aim of improving crime-fighting strategies.

The meeting was attended by community members, Johannesburg Metro Police Department, Ward 132 councillor Annette Deppe and Ward 112 councillor Lerato Mphefu as well as CPF sector chairs and managers from all five sectors.

Chairman for the Midrand CPF and SCF urged community members to be vigilant during load-shedding as criminal are starting to use it to their advantage.

Bridagier David Tsotsotso, the Midrand Police Station Commander said there are talks of a new police station being built in Midrand. “That could be a surplus of second police station, there will be a brigadier police station and a colonel police station which is way ahead of being negotiated from the head office.

“It could take a few years, maybe three years. We also received feedback with letters from the community, they are quite very happy with the service, they say it is very quick. There were a few letters which talked about parking which is a struggle here at the station.

“There are hijacking of pizza delivery bikes which we do not know where they are being taken to, as well as mobile application-based taxis which are being hijacked. There is also an increase in property crimes and theft out of motor vehicle but we have put measures into operation to combat those crimes with the help of all our police officers.

Tsotsotso concluded that the station has received 18 new constables and they have also received three new vehicles and might get another four later on. “Therefore, in terms of resources, we are being prioritised – all that is left is for us to work.”
