Young athletes show off their moves

MIDRAND – Midrand Primary School to take part in the district athletics competitions.

Midrand Primary School came out in first place at the Midrand Cluster Athletics Competition.

The event took place at Halfway House Primary School on 14 February, with more than 10 schools taking part and competing in shot-put, long jump, high jump, running and relay running.

Chairperson for the Johannesburg North District Athletics, Khazamula Mathebula, shared his excitement because of this year’s improvements. He said that the athletics season started on a high note. “All schools came back well prepared for the 2020 season. This year I saw schools which normally perform below par lifting themselves high.

“Midrand primary ruled in the field events, while Riversands primary, a school from an impoverished area, came up tops in the track events. With that being said I believe this year our cluster will produce more athletes to the national championship according to their performance this year.”

Mathebula added that as chairperson of district athletics, he believes sports in this community is progressing well. “If athletics clubs in our community can come and scout, they can assist in growing the sport.”

At the end of the day, the top three score sheet was as follows: Midrand Primary School won 19 gold; 20 silver and seven bronze medals, Halfway House Primary School won 14 gold, eight silver and eight bronze medals and Riversands Primary School took five gold, eight silver and three bronze medals.

Midrand primary sports master, Fisokuhle Skhosana, commended his team for their hard work adding that the school is proud of their athletes. “They have worked really hard during the off-season and now we are starting to see the fruits of that. I think it’s very important we keep in mind that this is only the first stage of competitions and there’s still a lot to be done but none the less we are proud of our pupils.

“I think the competitiveness we have among our kids and the commitment of teachers in coaching is brilliant, there is no I in team and MPS is blessed with a strong and well-versed coaching team.”

Skhosana added that they would be moving to the district trials in Bryanston. “I believe that our team is well prepared, the kids are ready and we are just excited to see them go perform, do what they do best and do what they love. Most importantly, we are making sure that our team is ready and well prepared and that they have ample chance and opportunity to do the best they can do to move on to the provincial round.”
