Local law enforcement educates community in Midrand

MIDRAND – Midrand police along with the Sector 3 community policing forum held an crime awareness campaign to alert residents of crime patterns in the area.

Midrand Police Station with the support of the Sector 3 Community Policing Forum held a crime awareness campaign at the San Ridge Square on 8 February.

The campaign was led by Sector 3 manager Constable Ngoako Matlhatlha, the CPF Sector 3 chairperson Marvin Maphiri and Social Crime Prevention officer Constable Thabiso Selowa.

According to the sector chairperson, Marvin Maphiri, they interacted with approximately 250 community members on crime safety tips, property-related crimes including hijackings, house and street robberies, while distributing flyers. He added, “Majority of our community members appreciated the awareness and noted their ignorance in most cases.”

Station spokesperson, Sergeant Matome Tlamela said that these awareness campaigns would be taking place in all sectors.

Tlamela added that residents should lock their houses and gates when they leave or in the evening, lock their office doors when away and secure belongings out of sight in cabinets or drawers as well as put their belongings in the boot of their cars at shopping centres.

She said, “As Midrand SAPS we are appealing to community members not to leave valuables unattended, avoid distractions while driving because sometimes hijackers bump into the vehicle in front of them forcing the vehicle to stop.

“If this happens to you, and you do not feel safe stopping your vehicle, drive to the nearest police station.”
