More details given about Kyalami suspects’ arrest

KYALAMI – The Gauteng police has released more details of how the suspects were arrested.

After Midrand Police Station released information yesterday (19 February) about the arrests of two suspects in the connection with a fatal shooting in Kyalami in January, the Gauteng Provincial Police has released more details about the arrests.

Spokesperson for the Gauteng police, Captain Kay Makhubele said that a joint operation lead by the local and Metro police led to the arrest of two suspects for the murder of an American national during the attempted hijacking.

He said, “The first suspect, aged 27, was traced and arrested on Tuesday evening, 18 February 2020 in Esselen Park in Ekurhuleni. Further investigation led police to the second suspect, aged 36, who was arrested on 19 February in Ekurhuleni.”

Police are still investigating the case and trying to establish if the suspects are linked to other crimes.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Midrand Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 21 February 2020.

The Midrand police have arrested two suspects who were allegedly involved in a fatal Kyalami shooting in January.

Spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station Sergeant Matome Tlamela said, “Brigadier [David] Tsotsotso, Station Commander of Midrand police, is extremely relieved to announce that two suspects have been arrested, and are in police custody, for the murder and attempted murder of the couple on Maple and Main roads, on 7 January.”

The brigadier thanked the Metro police for their assistance in the arrest as well as an informant that came forward.

Tlamela added that additional information will follow as soon as it becomes available.

The initial incident was reported in the Midrand Reporter article One man has been killed during a botched hijacking [published online on 7 January]. The incident took place when the victims were stopped by the armed suspects in an attempted hijacking. Provincial head of Corporate Communication Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said, “Two men allegedly stormed the couple’s vehicle and attempted to get inside the Nissan X-Trail, which then allegedly rolled back downhill and landed in a ditch.”

Peters added that shots were allegedly fired from the suspects’ vehicle. The female driver was wounded in the upper body and her husband killed.
