Man arrested for impersonating a police officer in Midrand

MIDRAND – A man has been detained at the Midrand Police Station for impersonating a police officer.

A man has been arrested yesterday morning (12 February) for impersonating a police officer on the N1 North in Midrand.

The spokesperson for the Midrand Police Station, Sergeant Matome Tlamela said the incident took place around 10.20am. She explained that Henry John Williams, a national traffic police official was driving on the N1 North when he noticed an unmarked white Ford Ranger. “The vehicle had blue lights on the dashboard as well as on the vehicle grill between the lights.”

Tlamela explained that according to the law, no private individual or company may make use of blue lights. “Williams made way for the Ford Ranger, but as the Ford Ranger passed, Williams noticed that the three occupants were wearing casual clothes. This raised suspicion, prompting Williams to immediately stop the Ranger.”

When interviewed, the driver of the Ford Ranger claimed the vehicle belonged to a security company and he was escorting a VIP from the Standerton Municipality. “The driver was placed under arrest for impersonating a police officer and taken and detained at the Midrand Police Station.”

The vehicle has been taken to a police vehicle pound. The suspect is due in court on charges of impersonating a police officer.
