Residents from Novalis House in Blue Hills get to work

BLUE HILLS – Novalis House offers a structured and fulfilling workshop programme for their residents.

Novalis House has a special work programme focused on giving their residents and day workers a productive life and sense of purpose.

Novalis House is an organisation based in Blue Hills that focuses on providing residential facilities and daycare for youth and adults with intellectual disabilities. The work programme was introduced in 1997 by Casa Do Sol school in Linden.

General manager of Novalis House Mary Owen said, “The workshop grew from the school which helps special needs children. When those children needed to leave the school environment at 18 years old, they developed a college where the workshop programme known as Casa Do Sol Enterprises was started.

“The programme was built to involve young adults in a work environment to encourage skills development among them. It gives them a sense of self-worth in a structured programme while being in a working environment.”

The workshop is now based at Novalis House and its residents do a variety of work including mailing for a bank, assembling presentation baskets for motor dealers, and packaging for a laboratory.

Workshop manager Sina Nkwe said the programme gave a structured workday with deadlines that gives the residents immense purpose. She added, “Everyone needs work and a feeling that they are giving and participating which helps to normalise our beneficiaries.”
