Midrand-based author Buyi Daweti shares her battle for accountability following the death of her daughter

NOORDWYK – Midrand resident and author Buyi Daweti shares her 12-year battle following her daughter's death.

Midrand resident and author Buyi Daweti is changing the health and legal sector for the best.

Buyi is the author of Victory and Justice at Last which gives a gripping account of her 12-year-battle for accountability following the tragic passing of her 22-year-old daughter Pamela, who died after giving birth from excessive bleeding.

The book maps out Buyi’s long journey to have the doctor responsible held to account. She said that following the loss of her daughter, she had to struggle with a prolonged legal battle which saw prosecutors struggle for four years to get the inquiry started due to incompetence which stemmed from documents and statements going missing.

An additional four years was spent cross-examining the witnesses, only for her legal representative to drop out of the case, leading to the magistrate finding no one liable for her daughter’s death. She added that after feeling that the state and legal representatives had failed her, she moved her case to the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa (NPA).

After another four years, the doctor responsible was found guilty of Pamela’s death and was convicted for five years for culpable homicide. Buyi said that the entire journey sparked an interest in advocacy surrounding medical negligence and legal awareness, giving doctors and patients the much-needed knowledge to avoid deaths in the future.
