Community members can now receive help with burying a loved one

RABIE RIDGE – Rabie Ridge's less-fortunate community members can now overcome the stress of burying a loved one.

Rabie Ridge’s Ward 80 Councillor, Makgoba Pagadi urges community members who need help with burying a loved one to visit his office for help on Mondays.

Pagadi said there are two ways one can get help. The first programme is called the ‘social burial’ which was introduced by the Social Development Department. “Social burial is there to assist community members who cannot afford to bury their loved ones.”

Pagadi said, for assistance, a member of the family can submit these documents to their nearest social workers offices:

• A referral letter from the councillor

• A letter from the hospital mortuary where the deceased’s body is being looked after

• A certified copy of the deceased’s identification document

• A certified copy of the identification document of the family member applying for assistance

• Two affidavits, stating that you are asking for the government to assist with the burial of your late family member and another stating that you are asking for the undertaker to assist you in issuing a death certificate for your deceased family member.

Pagadi added that those who have taken funeral cover or have a mortuary to assist but still need help can use the second programme called the ‘assistance burial’.

“The assistance burial programme was introduced by the Speaker of Council’s office along with ward councillors. For assistance, a family member must register or be registered for the Expanded Social Programme (ESP) at any Revenue Centre office across the City of Johannesburg.”

He said the family can benefit by getting food parcels in the form of vegetables supplied by the Economic Development Department’s food market, but in order to receive the help they need to get a letter from the councillor and the letter must reach the Office of the Speaker no later than Wednesday at 12am. The family can also get assistance with transport from the Ivory Park Taxi Association (IPTA) on the day of the funeral.”

Documents needed for the assistance burial programme:

• Identification document copy of the applicant

• An identification document and death certificate of the deceased

• An ESP number of the applicant or any family member.
