Residents in Halfway Gardens will soon be able to enjoy a new park in the area

HALFWAY GARDENS – Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo will be developing a park in Halfway Gardens.

The residents of Halfway Gardens have a new park on the horizon.

The park is located at the corner of 6th and 5th roads in Halfway Gardens and is approximately 200 square metres in length. Region A manager of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo Joseph Ndou said, “This is an undeveloped park. We have been maintaining it regularly. In this current financial year, even without having a capital expenditure budget allocated, we intend to develop the park and instal six bins and benches.”

Ndou said the ultimate goal would be to instal fencing around the park as well as by-law signage. He added that the entity had been cutting the grass on the park once every 60 days but its frequency had increased to once a month which prompted them to think about developing it further. “With the growth in residential spaces around this park, City Parks thought it was right to give the community a public space to promote social cohesion.

“We’d also like to promote healthy living among residents by developing parks rather than residents remaining in their enclosed environments.”

The park is currently half-gravel and is used frequently by meter taxi drivers as a parking area during the day, however, Ndou said the entity will add grass to the area and fencing which would deter anyone from parking in the park.

Ward 112 councillor Lerato Mphefo said, “I have seen the park and I think that there are some great ideas from City Parks.”

Mphefo expressed concern surrounding the installation of benches and bins that might attract people to sleep in the park or vandalism but welcomed the project as a great addition to the area.
