Road works on 9th Road in Noordwyk make good progress

NOORDWYK – The 9th Road upgrade project continues into 2020 with good progress.

The 9th Road upgrade project has begun again for 2020 with builders continuing the stormwater installation.

The project took a break over December and continued on 13 January.

Community liaison officer Zwelakhe Nkosi said, “We’re making slow but steady progress, we anticipate occasional rain delays with its usual pitfalls and also now that schools have reopened we need to work around that so that we minimise interruptions for the learners. ”

Nkosi said that the team is currently still working on the storm water installation before tarring can begin. There have been numerous hiccups to the project which have slowed down the progress including thunderstorms and the rocky terrain. The project is currently only permitted to build on 600m of the road due to a wetland that is still awaiting the results of an environmental impact study.

Nkosi added, “This is where we are so far but even though we are behind schedule it’s better than have a sub-standard road.”

Ward 112 councillor Lerato Mphefo said that she was happy with the progress made by the contractors and commended them on their work and communication of progress. “There is nothing for the community to worry about at this moment and I remain confident.”

The construction of 9th Road in Noordwyk was announced on 23 July last year with a sod-turning ceremony by former executive mayor Herman Mashaba. The road had been a pressing issue for the local community following a number of accidents due to reckless driving and poor traffic measures.
