Security companies are encouraged to work together to prevent crime in Midrand

MIDRAND – Local police hosted their first crime prevention unit meeting with security companies for the year.

The Midrand Police Station, along with different security companies from Midrand, held its first Crime Prevention Unit meeting at the Midrand Police Station on 16 January.

With crime multiplying wildly in the area, stakeholders from Ria Sebetsa, Omega Security, Melmo Security, Securitas, All Is Well among others sat in to discuss successes over the past weeks and how to fight the recurring crimes.

The station’s newly appointed Colonel Nomvula Xaba said the meeting was their first planning meeting for the year 2020 with all the relevant stakeholders.

Xaba added, “One of the biggest problems we are facing in the area of Midrand is that of theft out of motor vehicle, street robberies, house break-ins and theft of motor vehicles.

“As Midrand police, we would like to urge that our community members check if their doors are properly locked and to safely put away their valuables, be it handbags, laptops and cell phones so they are not easily exposed to criminals.”

Xaba concluded that people should also refrain from withdrawing large amounts of money because that might encourage thieves to follow them and rob them of their hard-earned cash.

Also at the meeting was ward 112 councillor, Lerato Mphefo who commended the different security personnel for deciding to put their differences aside as they are competitors and focusing at fighting for one vision – a crime-free Midrand. “I think we have a really good recipe here but I do not know where we fail as a community. I can only encourage you to keep working together and, if you are not already in a security group, get yourself in a security group because it will help you and your work as well.

“When dogs are barking, when suspicious activities are reported or anyone sees a person who is suspicious walking on the road, these things are shared on those chat groups and that will allow you to attend to them immediately.”

Mphefo added that, as a ward councillor, she can assist with service delivery. “Service delivery can affect security, for instance, street lights that are not working, long grass that is not being cut and areas that are not being well maintained, those areas can also be an issue for you as security people, so if there is anything that you need help with you can contact me.”
