Learner stabbed at school

MIDRAND – Noordwyk Secondary School learner stabs a fellow learner outside school yard.

Midrand Police Station received a call from a community member on 26 November reporting that a learner from Noordwyk Secondary School in Midrand had stabbed another learner.

According to the Midrand Police Station’s spokesperson SergeantMatome Tlamela, two Grade 12 male learners, one 18 and the other 17 were fighting when the 18-year-old allegedly stabbed the 17-year-old.

Tlamela added, “The incident happened after school as the learners had just finished writing their last exam paper. When police arrived at the scene after being alerted of the incident, the learner suspected of stabbing the other had fled the scene while the victim was being taken to Waterfall Hospital.

“A case of assault with purpose to inflict grievous bodily harm was opened by the state on behalf of the victim.

“We still need a statement from the victim, therefore investigations are still in progress.”

Noordwyk Secondary School principal, Alex Tau, acknowledged that the learners were from his school. “The incident happened outside the school yard by the traffic circle, which is where learners normally wait for their transport,” he said.

“As a school we are simply disappointed by the incident, even though it happened outside the school premises.”

Tau added that while the Grade 12 learners were writing their exam he had a team of teachers going into classrooms to search the learners’ bags for weapons or drugs and alcohol. He said they know that the learners find a way to celebrate their final paper in very wrong ways.

“Unfortunately, after conducting the search we found nothing besides dagga and cigarettes and we never came across any weapons.”
