Praise for Mashaba

JOHANNESBURG – Driving under the influence continues to rise in all regions with 1 043 arrests recorded in October.

Chief of Metro Police David Tembe praised the outgoing mayor of City of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba for his unwavering support during the tabling of the JMPD monthly performance report on 20 November at the Municipal Council Chamber.

Mashaba, who initiated the tradition of monthly reports about a year ago, was attending his last briefing with the Metro police after he resigned from his duties last month. Tembe said because of Mashaba’s support, the department has seen significant improvements including the promotion of 60 women to senior positions, flexible working hours for officers which have minimised accidents, improved performance and overtime allowance which have boosted the morale of employees.

“It is the support of the mayor that has made it all possible for JMPD to grow into the brand it is in the country. I hope that the tabling of monthly performance reports would continue even after mayor Mashaba has left. It is because of these reports that we are kept on our toes and officers are encouraged to work harder,” said Tembe.

Meanwhile, driving under the influence continues to rise in all regions with 1 043 arrests recorded in October compared to 1 033 in September. Midrand Diepsloot, Lanseria and Fourways recorded 57 arrests, Randburg, Rosebank, Greenside and Cresta had 85 arrests, Alexandra, Sandton and Bramley 91, the inner city, Braamfontein and Yeoville 100 and 84 on the freeway. The rest of the arrests were made in other regions.

A total of 12 arrests were made for possession of drugs, 13 for stolen goods, 11 for assault, eight for robbery, 19 for unlicensed firearm and 19 for hijacked or stolen vehicles. The accident unit recorded 47 crashes in October with one cyclist, 14 drivers, five passengers and 25 pedestrians killed.

“There’s a need for serious campaigning to teach pedestrians about road safety. The number of pedestrians killed on our roads is alarming and we cannot continue this way,” said Tembe.

Mashaba said the JMPD would be launching its festive season safety campaign imminently and encouraged officers not to compromise with motorists who are found driving under the influence of alcohol. “Those who do can be sure that they will be found sooner rather than later. I would like to thank all law enforcement officers with the JMPD for carrying out your duties with pride. I wish Chief Tembe and the JMPD well for pone of the most demanding periods of the year,” said Mashaba.
