JMPD fine 10 after Blue Hill residents complain

BLUE HILLS – Officers from the JMPD hosted a special operation in Blue Hills on 14 November to address taxis driving on the shoulder of the road.

The Joburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has acted against vehicles that drive on the shoulder of the R55.

On 14 November a number of JMPD officers held a special operation on the R55 in the Blue Hills area, according to spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

He explained that the police department decided to hold the operation in response to numerous complaints made to them about taxis that were driving on the shoulder of the road. “A total of 10 traffic fines of R1 000 each were given to taxi drivers for driving on the shoulder.

“Three unroadworthy taxis had to be towed to the JMPD pound.”

He added that a fourth was given a discontinue notice by the officers because it was in an extremely unroadworthy condition.

“The owners of these vehicles will have to pay R3 130 per vehicle in order to get them back.”

Back in March, the JMPD introduced a WhatsApp-based hotline that Joburg drivers can use to report negligent or reckless driving and by-law infringement to the authorities. Those wishing to report issues need to take a clear photo or video featuring the target of your complaint (including relevant information such as their registration number, date, time and location) to 081 410 6338. Please also provide your name and contact details, which will be kept anonymous.
