In the Christmas spirit

MIDRAND – Curro Midrand learners donate 51 shoeboxes to the less fortunate for Christmas.

Grade 7 learners from Curro Midrand who are part of the school’s Reach Out Committee participated in the Santa Shoebox Project on 1 November delivering 51 boxes, containing personalised gifts of essential items and treats to underprivileged children. According to Kayla Wolmarans the school’s secretary, each year the Santa Shoebox Project collects and distributes personalised gifts of essential items and treats to underprivileged children, distributing over 800 000 boxes all across South Africa and Namibia.

Wolmarans said the learners felt that since it is almost time for Christmas, a special time in any child’s life and a time to spend with family and friends, they decided to do something special for children who are less fortunate.

She explained that the learners approached the teachers and their classes to either donate items or money. “The junior phase, who not only donated money but also items for the Santa Shoebox Project, created excellent handmade decorations for the boxes and the senior phase helped with donating and wrapping their own boxes.

“On Friday the learners took the shoeboxes to the drop-off station in Randburg which is a warehouse. Upon arrival, the Grade 7 learners were given a warm welcome and a tour around the warehouse. Eager to lend a helping hand at the warehouse, they were also put to work and given specific duties to do, which they executed flawlessly.”
