A cleaner Midrand for all

IVORY PARK – Sanco in Ward 133 embarks on cleaning the whole of Midrand.

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in Ward 133, Ivory Park hosted a clean-up campaign on 12 November to get rid of all the waste placed near schools in the area.

The event was supported by Sanco’s zonal leadership members from around the greater Midrand area, fitness groups, activists who campaign about the dangers of paraffin, senior soccer team Bakekulu Bakekulu and Pikitup among others.

Paulina Phago, the secretary for Sanco Ward 133 explained that they recently adopted the campaign.

“We decided that we should start at Ward 133 and clean up the whole of Midrand and make sure it stays clean because most of the illegal dumping sites are next to schools.

“With this cleaning campaign, we want to let the people know that they cannot just dump rubbish anywhere because there are designated areas specifically meant for dumping so our environment can be clean.”

Petrus Segabutla, who is the branch’s chairperson added that they also called Pikitup to help them so that by the end of the day their environment is clean and clear of refuse.

“Illegal dumping is a health hazard and a risk because we find that residents sometimes throw dead animals in those illegal dumping areas. We are also talking with homeowners who rent out their houses to let them know when the garbage truck will come to their side so they can know and encourage their tenants to put the garbage outside the gates.”
