The biggest shopping event of the year is almost upon us – 29 November is Black Friday, a discount shopping event South Africans have happily embraced.
Start flexing those fingers to be quick on the ‘check out’ click, because this Black Friday is going to be something special.
Head of brand at Superbalist, Melanie van der Merwe offers the following tips ahead of the shopping frenzy:
- Know the sizing chart when buying online: Ever purchased the perfect dress online only to find that it’s two sizes too large once it gets delivered? Know the sizing chart of your retailer so you can measure your body.
- Know the returns policy: An oldie but definitely something many of us forget while we’re rushing to fill our carts. Although most retailers accept returns, these may not apply to every item you purchase on Black Friday or could only be valid for a specific period of time (such as 30 days from the date of purchase). Before Black Friday, check the terms and conditions at your favourite stores so you can return any items bought in the spur of the moment.
- Make a buy/skip list: Make a list of must-haves, with another column for deal-dependent nice-to-haves. This will help keep you focused amidst all the temptation. Add items to your online wishlist well in advance so you can watch and see if their prices fall.
- Get the app: Download the apps for online retailers you know you’ll be shopping from this Black Friday. Not only will you be able to shop on-the-go but if you turn on the push notifications and add items to your wishlist, the app will send an alert to your phone once the item is available or discounted.
- Score the early deals: Since Black Friday is still fairly new in South Africa, many retailers will only mark down their prices on the day while some retailers will have deals on selected days throughout November.
