Shoot-out leaves one dead

MIDRAND – A suspect has been shot dead and four others at large following a shoot-out in Midrand.

A shoot-out following a housebreaking has left one dead on 24 October.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said, “A housebreaking suspect was fatally wounded on Thursday morning, 24 October 2019 during a shoot-out with police in Midrand where police also recovered suspected stolen property.”

The police were conducting a routine stop-and-search operation on the R55 in Midrand when they noticed a Corsa bakkie with five suspicious occupants. The police signalled the bakkie to stop, however, it accelerated and a high-speed chase ensued.

Peters added, “It is alleged that suspects started shooting at the police who returned fire. One of the suspects succumbed to gunshot wounds while the other four evaded arrest.”

Police then recovered a replica of a firearm, housebreaking implements and goods suspected to have been stolen during earlier housebreaking in Kyalami.

The car driven by the suspects was impounded pending investigation.

The police have launched a manhunt for the other suspects who are still at large.
