Midrand SPCA lends a helping hand to Ivory Park community

MIDRAND – The Midrand SPCA visited Ivory Park for a special outreach programme.

The Midrand SPCA hosted a special outreach programme in Ivory Park on 12 October.

General manager of the Midrand SPCA Pam Pretorius said the outreach saw over 300 dogs receive vaccinations along with flea and tick treatment and gave 10 sterilisations on the day.

The organisation also donated blankets and food to dog owners in the area and spent time giving the community some educational tips which touched on the rules on chaining of animals, rabies and the urgent issue surrounding dogfighting which the Midrand SPCA have worked tirelessly to end.

Pretorius said, “The outreach was amazing for us. It was great for this community to come together. There were a few people who were incredible, who live in poor conditions but have an incredible love for their animals.”

She added that there is a great need for sterilisations in the Midrand SPCA’s area. “Many of these animals are not being sterilised and they keep on breeding, and [the owners] can’t look after them. So we have to get out there and start sterilising.”

“We need to prevent all these unwanted litters. Because many can’t look after them, and that’s when they get abandoned, dumped or given away to free homes. Its a community health hazard with all the stray animals with the disease that can spread.”

The Midrand SPCA is calling on the local community for sponsorship to run sterilisation campaigns. “We have a lot of people who come in for sterilisation but can’t afford it. The only way we can avoid the issues surrounding the abuse of animals is to sterilise.”
