Pave the way to safety

NOORDWYK – The work on 9th road in Noordwyk is moving forward with contractors working on the new stormwater drain system.

The work on the 9th Road upgrade project is on the move with a new stormwater system being developed and installed.

The 9th Road upgrade has been an issue for many years in the Noordwyk area, as reported in the Midrand Reporter article Go down a shaky road [Week ending 15 February].

The gravel road has seen a great deal of unruly driving leading to various accidents including an accident that took place in front of Noordwyk Primary School on 9th Road which left a Grade 3 learner seriously injured in February this year.

Ward 112 councillor Lerato Mphefo said that she is happy with the movement in the project, “They started with the stormwater drainage on the road and are digging the trenches to instal it.”

Community liaison officer for the project Zwelakhe Nkosi said that the delay of the installation of the stormwater drain was finding a fibre system line which called for a redesign of the stormwater system, which was approved.

The site is bustling with the ground being lifted to build the system. Mphefo added, “I’m happy about the work. They do have a time period to finish it by early next year. Myself along with the whole community are looking forward to the end result.”

The road’s upgrade was officially announced through a sod-turning ceremony hosted by the City of Johannesburg in July with Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba in attendance.

At the event, Mashaba said, “The upgrades are aimed at improving access to other routes and easing congestion as the road serves as a link to homes and work centres. It is also aimed at increasing pedestrian safety as well as enhancing the appearance of our roads.”

Mphefo said, “I’m excited that it has started moving. Traffic will be minimised for residents. The convenience and safety of the kids will be a great benefit.”
