Rand Water implements Stage 2 water supply restrictions in some parts of Joburg
JOBURG – Rand Water is concerned that the current demand for water supply is unsustainable.
Rand Water has confirmed that they will be implementing Stage 2 water restrictions in some areas in the City of Johannesburg due to the high demand.
Media relations manager for Rand Water Justice Mohale said on Thursday, 24 October the current equitable water supply by Rand Water is 4370Ml/d, however, the average consumption at the moment is 4900Ml/d.
The lack of rainfall and continuous heatwave conditions has increased the demand for water supply and the implementation of the water restrictions is to bring down the demand.
The City of Joburg and Joburg Water said in a joint statement, “Johannesburg Water has begun throttling reservoirs between the rate of 20 per cent to 40 per cent in line with restrictions imposed by Rand Water.”
Water restrictions include no watering of gardens between 6am and 6pm and it is not allowed to wash paved areas and driveway using hosepipes.
Rand Water has moved their planned media briefing for Friday, 25 October to Monday, 28 October.
Some tips to save water:
- Do not leave any taps dripping
- Wash your car on the grass, this will assist watering your lawn at the same time
- Use a watering can instead of a hosepipe
- Shorten your showering time, if you take baths, take shallow baths to avoid fulling up the bathtub
- Use a glass of water to rinse when brushing your teeth.
