Man surrenders to police

IVORY PARK – The suspect handed himself over to the police after being on the run for two weeks.

A man from Ivory Park is expected to appear at the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court after allegedly stabbing another man.

The victim, in his 30’s, was fatally injured on 28 September, after the suspect confronted him and asked him what was going on in one of the backrooms in his yard.

According to the Ivory Park Police Station spokesperson Captain Bernard Matimulane, witnesses who were present at the scene and know where the suspect lives said the suspect had been on the run ever since the incident occurred.

“Thanks to the excellent working relationship between the witnesses and the investigating officers who had been tasked to trace and arrest him, the suspect decided to bring himself forward and surrender.”

Matimulane said that on the night the incident took place, the suspect allegedly arrived at the victim’s home in the company of five other people. He said that one of the men in the group was looking for his sister who had last been seen at the victim’s address.

“The suspect, who was not even related to the matter, felt that he and the people he was with were being disrespected by the deceased. To the dismay of all present, the suspect is alleged to have taken a knife, stabbed the deceased twice and fled the scene on foot.”

Ivory Park Police Station Commander, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, welcomed this arrest and thanked the investigating officers and the witnesses who not only gave statements but kept the police abreast of the fugitive’s moves.

“I think it must have dawned upon the suspect that he was not only on the police’s radar but also that of his neighbours and other witnesses. With the high levels of violent crimes in our community, Ivory Park itself can do well with witnesses and members of the community who are always willing to help the police when they are needed most,” he added.

Ngcobo concluded that if many people can adopt this attitude to crime, many crimes can be easily dealt with.
