Domestic violence concerns in Ivory Park

IVORY PARK – Ivory Park Police Station Commander, Brigadier David Ngcobo urges community members to lay charges or get protection orders against their abusive partners.

Ivory Park Police Station management is concerned about the numerous reports of assaults, most of which had elements of domestic violence, which have been reported the police station.

The officers and would like to appeal to community members to seek help as soon as possible to avoid paying with their lives.

Station spokesperson, Captain Bernard Matimulane added that, as part of a safety measure, victims and potential victims faced with domestic violence should carry a list of emergency contacts with them. “Keep an extra set of house keys and your car keys in a safe place where you have easy access to them, keep some money for public transport in a safe place where easily reachable and use it in a case of an emergency.

“And in instances where you are planning to leave, do so when the perpetrator is not around to avoid an escalation in confrontation,” added Matimulane

Ivory Park Station Commander, Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo, added that they were worried by the fact that, at any given time, there is a suspect or two in their station’s holding cells alleged to have assaulted, and in many instances injured, their spouse. “Because of the environment in which domestic violence takes place, we may end up with many more such cases because of secrecy as many victims are reluctant to come forward.”

“Therefore I remind any victims of domestic violence throughout Ivory Park and surrounding areas that they all have a right to lay a criminal charge with the police. If the conduct of the perpetrator constitutes an offence, or if you have to apply for a protection order, do it at the nearest magistrates’ court or do both.”

He concluded that families of victims should support the victims and never exert pressure on them to drop cases against the perpetrators.
