Hawks arrest suspects with rhino horn

MIDRAND – The Hawks and Midrand police took down two suspects in possession of rhino horn.

Two suspects were arrested for the possession of rhino horn on the N1 southbound in Midrand on 17 September.

The spokesperson for the Hawks Captain Lloyd Ramovha said the two suspects were arrested following an intelligence-driven operation by members of the Hawks’ Wildlife Anti-Trafficking unit, Crime Intelligence, and Midrand police detectives.

He added, “The team spotted and intercepted a vehicle they were waiting for along the N1 southbound, just before the Olifantsfontein off-ramp in Midrand on Tuesday afternoon.”

Officers searched the suspects’ VW Golf in which they discovered concealed refuse bags underneath the car’s passenger seat.

Ramovha said, “Preliminary investigations suggest that the rhino horn, with yet to be determined value, was allegedly smuggled from Mpumalanga and was on its way to be sold in Johannesburg.”

The suspects, aged 38 and 47, are expected to make their first court appearance in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court for contravening the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act.
