Ready to take on a new adventure

MIDRAND – Midrand Victim Empowerment Centre bids farewell to unit facilitator, Desiree Govender.

The Midrand Victim Empowerment Centre will be saying goodbye to unit facilitator Desiree Govender.

Govender said, “From a very young age I grappled with my passion, and I realised that it was people.”

She began her relationship with victim support during her studies of psychology and the volunteer work she had done, first with South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) before moving to the victim empowerment unit in Sandton.

In 2018 she took up working with the Midrand Police Station’s Victim Empowerment Centre.

“The Victim Empowerment Centre is of paramount importance to the local community. Many women don’t know about their rights, and the centre is here to guide and support these women. Our doors are open and we are here to support.”

Govender will be heading off to New Zealand to work as a trauma counsellor in Queensland. On her experiences, she said, “I think, at the Victim Empowerment Centre, it wasn’t a solo performance. I had help from everybody. My journey was amazing. I learnt how to manage crises and emotions better, and the more I worked, the teacher became a master.”
