MIDRAND – Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula sent condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the N1 taxi crash.

Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula expressed heartfelt condolences to those who lost their loved ones in the horrible minibus taxi collision which took place on the N1 South near the Allandale off-ramp and the Buccleuch interchange in Midrand, after visiting the accident scene on 18 August.

A media release later published after the crash by the Office of the Ministry stated that the minister made his way to the scene after conducting a number of law-enforcement roadblocks to highlight the signing of the Aarto (Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offences) Bill into law.

“The Road Traffic Management Corporation’s Crash Investigation Unit was on-site and will investigate the cause of the collision,” said Mbalula

Ten people died in the fatal collision after the driver of the taxi had lost control of the vehicle and hit the concrete barrier.

Three cars were involved in the collision.

Chief Superintendent and spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metro Police Department, Wayne Minnaar, confirmed that the accident occurred just after 1pm on Sunday, 18 August, with at least nine people confirmed dead on the scene.

“Four people were sent to hospitals, a child and three elderly people. One of the adults later died at the Tembisa Hospital.”

Minnaar said that a child survived the collision.

Minnaar added, “The contributory factor is definitely reckless and extremely high-speed driving.”
