Staff from Buccleuch Primary School took part in the annual Walk the Talk to raise awareness for one of their young learners. Ayaan Bhoopal, who was diagnosed with congenital heart disease shortly after he was born, has continued to be an inspiration to his teachers. Ayaan, who is now nine years old, has had five open heart surgeries but despite his hurdles, continues to attend school.
Ayaan’s mom, Seshma, who is also a teacher at Buccleuch Primary School works diligently to raise awareness about congenital heart disease. Each year, Walk the Talk encourages participants to walk for a cause and this year the staff dedicated their time to show support for Ayaan and commemorate his fighting spirit during his health challenges.
Grade 1 teacher at Buccleuch Primary School, Cherese Nelson said, “Walking in Ayaan’s honour was honestly the least we could do for such a brave young man. In my short time with and around Ayaan I’ve learned about the value of life and how fragile it is.” Hassan Wadvalla, the acting principal at the school said that although there was a sense of excitement ahead of the walk, it was also tinged with sadness as Ayaan could not be there. “Each step we took brought a reminder of Ayaan and the struggles he has to endure. Each step was for the bravery of a young boy and in celebration of his perseverance and strength.”
Another teacher, Llana Hayns, said, “Ayaan is and always will be one of the greatest inspirations in my life. He taught me no matter how life tries to knock you down, keep smiling, live life to the fullest and enjoy every moment.” Melissa Serfontein, a Grade 3 teacher, added, “ I have never met a young boy with so much love, compassion, energy and drive to overcome anything life throws at him.” Bhoopal said the support from the school has been amazing and she always participates in awareness campaigns for congenital heart disease. She said when Ayaan was born she didn’t know what congenital heart disease was and now feels that it is important to raise awareness so that other parents know of the symptoms.
