The upgraded Wilro Park substation is launched

MIDRAND – The City has upgraded the Wilro Park substation at the cost of R131 million, and it is one of the 11 major upgrades that City Power had committed to do.

City Power has officially launched the revamped Wilro Park substation on 8 August, leaving the entity with six more to be completed and launched in the current financial year. The substation, which was upgraded at the cost of R131 million, was one of the 11 major upgrades that City Power had committed to do.

The six substations that are due to be completed and launched in this financial year include Lancefield, Mondeor, Waterfall, Pennyville, Mulbarton and Rooseveldt. The substations were initially budgeted for in the previous financial year. Spokesperson for City Power Isaac Mangena revealed that in the current financial year, the entity has planned to complete Cleveland and Hopefield substations. Furthermore, Eldorado Park and Lutz are earmarked for the construction of new substations.

The launch of Wilro Park substation was attended by City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba, MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Nico de Jager and City Power officials. Mashaba said, “Before the upgrades started, the substation had already been in existence for well over 40 years, and the equipment had surpassed its average lifespan. In an effort to combat power outages faced The upgraded Wilro Park substation is launched by residents in Wilro Park and surrounds, three 45MVA transformers were installed. “This is an improvement from the two 40MVA transformers that existed before,” Mashaba added that the upgrades were key to grid stability in Johannesburg where each individual upgrade contributed to a more reliable overall power supply.

The substation will supply about 5 000 customers based in Roodepoort, Wilro Park, Princess Crossing, Princess, Roodekrans, Helderkruin and Breaunanda areas. “Wilro Park substation’s safety operating standards have now been enhanced, mitigating the risk of injuries. “The upgrade further allows for any future service connections that can be made from the substation without compromising the stability of the grid.”

Furthermore, the substation has been capacitated with an 88kv indoor gas-insulated switchgear system which will ensure that technicians operate on the circuit breakers remotely.
