Construction still idles

NOORDWYK – The 9th Road tarring project is still on hold since the ceremonial sod turning.

Since the official sod turning to introduce tarring of 9th Road in Noordwyk, work has been slow to commence in the area.

The tarring of 9th Road has been a pressing issue for the local community with numerous accidents taking place on the road due to reckless driving and a lack of traffic-calming measures.

The project was officially introduced on 23 July, through the sod-turning ceremony and Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba welcomed the project.

Since the project was launched, the building site has remained relatively idle with workers sitting around and trucks immobile. Community liaison officer Zwelakhe Nkosi said that a number of important documents, including wayleaves and permits for the road, was needed in order for them to break ground.

Nkosi said that on the surface it may seem to idle but there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work being done for permits to get the actual work done.

He added they are currently approaching the Noordwyk Primary School and placing fencing so that the building process does not affect the school and its learners.

Ward 112 councillor Lerato Mphefo said that she will be liaising with the relevant parties involved in the projects to understand where the tarring process currently stands and getting a commitment from all of them to get the project moving.
