Tekkie Tax raises awareness for displaced people

MIDRAND – Tekkie Tax aimed to raise awareness on the day for displaced people and animals.

To raise awareness for displaced people and animals, Tekkie Tax hosted a Hobo Day on 6 July at the Campus of Performing Arts (Copa) in Midrand.

Privileged people had the opportunity to experience a day in the life of those who have absolutely nothing. People came to show solidarity with those in need and a brave group of 20 guests slept outside for the evening with the bare basics to protect them from the elements.

As winter can be especially unforgiving, even more for those who find themselves without shelter from the elements, the team at Tekkie Tax and their loyal supporters have pledged to create awareness around the issue of homelessness since 2017.

Alongside the thousands of people who spend the bitterly cold winters on the streets are their loyal companions, their cats and dogs, who have to brave the elements without any choice or comfort.

This year was made possible by the Midrand SPCA who was there to look after the animals, Copa Foundation and Child Welfare Germiston. Furthermore, with the sponsorship by John Dory’s in Jean Crossing, Centurion, the Tekkie Tax team was able to hand out a large number of food parcels to displaced people living in and around Centurion.

“It is nearly impossible to determine what number of people are homeless in our country at the moment as, due to our socio-economic state, this is an ever-increasing occurrence in our daily lives,” said Tekkie Tax CEO, Germa Hattingh.

The company also reported that it has long been one of the front-runners in fundraising in the country and it supports more than 250 non-profit organisations. Raising funds each year is even more important for the company as taking care of those without means or less fortunate is something that all of us should strive to do in the current global economic crisis.

“Every person that joins us every year, walks away with a profound sense of the struggle homeless people have to suffer through each day of their lives. It really is an eye-opener for all,” said Hattingh.

Tekkie Tax thanked their sponsors, U-Vita, MonitorNet, Cafe2Go Harties, Copa and their celebrity guests John Owens, Jennifer Zamudio and Juan Marais.

The company will be hosting Hobo Day for Execs on 17 August, where they challenge the CEOs and senior managers of companies to join them for a cold night out under the stars.

Tickets prices for the Executive Hobo Day is R2 000 per person and all proceeds will go towards care for the displaced and their animals in South Africa.
