She goes the extra mile

MIDRAND – Children gather at the Rabie Ridge Stadium for the first Annual Kids Festival.

Parents often don’t know how to keep their children busy during the school holidays, but a Grade 11 learner from Allanridge Secondary School, Bathabile Lesedi Nthabu has seen an opportunity to keep children entertained by hosting a fundraising event.

Nthabu hosted the first Annual Kids Festival at the Rabie Ridge Stadium on 1 July to keep the children away from trouble during the school holidays.

“I decided to have kids festival since the schools are closed,” said Nthabu.

“Some [kids] are out on the streets getting into trouble. I thought of a day out with the kids having fun and exercising.”

The 18-year-old said she was happy with the support from her community as she wasn’t expecting a big turnout for her first event.

“I am happy with the support of the people. For my first-time event, it was quite good and I didn’t expect that. A lot of parents were supportive and some even made donations.”

Nthabu said the event was not only to entertain but also to raise funds for charity. “I’m raising these funds for charity but I haven’t chosen one yet. I am looking for a charity that is in need of money; one that doesn’t get a lot of funding.”
