Environmental concerns halt progress on 9th Road

NOORDWYK – The tarring process of 9th road in Noordwyk has been halted due to environmental concerns.

The tarring of 9th Road in Noordwyk has been halted but is expected to commence in September.

The gravel road has been an area for concern for the local community following a number of accidents over the years.

After an accident in front of Noordwyk Primary School, which left a Grade 3 learner seriously injured in February this year, former Ward 112 councillor Madeleine Hicklin pushed for the process of tarring the road.

The process began earlier this year, with the appointment of a contractor.

The entire project is expected to take six months with the scope entailing mass earthworks, installation of stormwater pipes and structures.

The DA PR councillor who takes care of Ward 112, Nicole Rahn, said that the slowing down of the tarring process stems from the need for an environmental impact assessment (EIA) to be done in the area.

She said the area is home to a wetland and a nautical habitat for frogs. “The process is thus taking longer than expected. They are, however, hoping to conclude by September although they cannot commit to this with 100 per cent certainty.

“Unfortunately, the issue with the project is that it was an entirely new project initiated by councillor Madeleine Hicklin so they literally had to start the planning and design from scratch. While it’s a seemingly easy win, the process has turned out to be rather long as a result of the EIA”
