Ready for the Netherlands

RANDJESFONTEIN – Local vaulter, Jordan Wright trains hard ahead of the championships in the Netherlands.

Randjesfontein vaulter, Jordan Wright will represent South Africa at the FEI World Vaulting Championship for Juniors 2019.

The 16-year-old equestrian athlete will head to Ermelo in the Netherlands with coach, Bongani Mvumvu, where he will compete against the world’s best young vaulters from 24 to 28 July.

“The biggest challenge will probably be adapting to the new horse that I have to vault on and also competing against world class athletes from all different countries,” said the youngster.

It is for this reason that Jordan and Mvumvu are about to travel to Germany to spend three weeks training with the new horse.

In the days before he travels, Jordan is hard at work training with his vaulting horse, Onduno Glaidor, while his sister Shea Wright acts as lunger for him in their yard at home.

In between his standing, jumping, twisting and turning on horseback, Jordan told Midrand Reporter he hopes to represent his country well and gain experience from the event so that if he ever qualifies for it again, it will be familiar to him.

“I have been vaulting for 12 years. Probably my favourite thing about vaulting is just the interaction with the horses, how lovely the horses are at shows.

“My least favourite thing would probably be all the exercise that coaches make you do, and running.”

Jordan explained that vaulters have to be very fit to perform the tricks they do on horseback.

He is also the current South African Junior Male Vaulting title holder.
