Mob killing is condemned

IVORY PARK – Robbery suspect gets chased and brutally killed by mob.

A man in his 20s was killed brutally by a mob in Kaalfontein after he and two other suspects had allegedly stolen phones and valuables from a group of women who were making their way across the bridge on Angelfish Street.

Community members who asked not to be named said the three men were waiting by the bridge, preying on women who go to work early around 6am as it is still dark because it is winter. “The three men intimidated the three women and tried to take their phones. The women screamed and community members rushed to catch the suspects, screaming ‘Vimba’ (Catch them) and they caught one of them (the deceased).”

According to Captain Bernard Matimulane of Ivory Park Police Station, the deceased was beaten to death by members of the community on 21 June. He is also suspected to be connected to a string of other robberies in the area.

“The deceased was assaulted and it looks like the mob almost burnt him. We are investigating a case of murder and the robbery victims are yet to come forward to the police station.

“We urge community members who have information to come forward to the Ivory Park Police Station or to call 011 990 9600 or 08600 10111 and assist us in solving this case.”
