Ceta sends its students off to China

MIDRAND – CETA offers students from various TVET Colleges an opportunity to gain experimental learning in different Chinese construction companies.


The Midrand-based company, Construction Education and Training Authority’s management team bid farewell to 33 students from various TVET Colleges within the Civil Engineering Faculty all over the country on 21 June at OR Tambo International Airport.

According to Construction Education and Training Authority (Ceta), the company signed an agreement with the Chinese Culture and International Education Exchange Centre to recruit 300 students who will be placed in Chinese construction companies to do internship programmes and gain experimental learning required for their studies.

The aim of the company is to provide skills development services to the construction sector, however, they have also committed to assisting the successful interns to find employment opportunities affiliated to their studies upon their return from China.

Furthermore, the company reported that the programme will assist the candidates to progress to more technical occupations and to be equipped to compete in the employment market.

Ceta CEO Robert Semenya said, “This is one of the key programmes the company has recently implemented to offer students the opportunity to get experimental learning in China for a period of 12 months. We are currently sending off 33 students [on 21 June] who are part of the 300 students that were recruited and we have already sent more than 200 students.

“If the programme is successful, as we are doing it for the first time, Ceta will continue doing it.”

The director of Chinese Culture and International Education Exchange Centre, Dr. Zhilei Lu added that the programme not only aims to offer skills but also targets to train the students to become entrepreneurs.

According to Ceta, the project targets on tackling the scarcity of workplaces for practical experience and technical skills exposure.

Nkangala TVET College civil engineering student Lifa Makola said, “I am very thrilled and feel so blessed to be given such a great opportunity. We have been waiting for it since early this year and I believe that it will open doors for us.”
