Paruk wins big

MIDRAND – Summerhill Preparatory student Uzayr Paruk won big in two club gymnastic competitions.

Summerhill Preparatory have expressed pride in young gymnast Uzayr Paruk, a Grade 6 learner, who has won two gold medals in club competitions.

A spokesperson for the school Teressa Oates said that Uzayr was inspired by American gymnast Sofie Dossie and taught himself the sport by watching YouTube videos which though chin stands and handstands.

Oates added that in February this year, Uzayr’s mother enrolled him at the Lefido Acrobatics Gymnastics Club in Newlands under coach Claudia Havenga. In May, he was assessed as a level 5 gymnast and was partnered with fellow club member, nine-year-old Blake Peterson. Together they participated in club competitions hosted by Gymfinity and Lefido on 18 and 25 May respectively, winning gold medals in both competitions.

Oates said, “Uzayr will take part in one more club competition on 25 June, in order to qualify for the district competition in August. If he is successful, he will participate in the provincial competition followed by the national competition.”
