Ivory Park police see breakthrough in rape and murder case

IVORY PARK – Ivory Park police detectives finally make a breakthrough in two rape cases, one of which led to murder.

Ivory Park Police Station detectives made a breakthrough in a case involving a suspect who was allegedly involved in two rape cases, one leading to a murder of a local woman a few years ago.

The station’s communications officer Captain Bernard Matimulane said in a statement that the first rape and murder case victim was raped and then stabbed with a sharp object in her neck, which led to her instant death in 2010. In the second case in 2011, a victim was raped next to Motsu Section in Tembisa. “The detectives received DNA results from SAPS Forensic Science Laboratory, which assisted them after they conducted background searches.

“They discovered that the person they have been looking for was already behind bars in Modderbee Prison, where he has been standing trial for another rape case he was involved in, in January.”

Due to the hard work and unwavering tenacity of Detective Constable Edmond Lebopo, the 31-year-old was eventually identified as the suspect in the murder and two rape cases which the station has been working on. Station commander Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo said, “The long arm of the law has a way of catching up with criminals when they least expect it. We remain undistracted in our quest to ensure that victims of crime receive the justice they so deserve.”

Captain Matimulane said the suspect appeared at the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court on 7 May. The matter has been postponed to 5 July for further investigation.
