Midrand police pay unexpected visit at Blue Hills College

MIDRAND – Police conduct a drug search at Blue Hills College.

Midrand police, along with the help of other units and the Community Police Forum, were at Blue Hills College on 12 May to conduct a drug search.

After classes commenced in the morning, Midrand Police Station, Metro police K9 unit, Midrand Community Police Forum, security companies, and local pastors, all led by Captain Thapelo Molepo, came together, going from class to class and dorms with sniffer dogs in search of drugs.

They also imparted some wise words about drugs use and the consequences thereof to the learners.

School principal Bekithemba Ndlovu said that after realising that the school disciplinary committee was sitting now and then on drug-related issues, they approached the Midrand Police Station to assist them in ending the use of drugs by learners.

“We realised that learners using drugs tend to be a problem for educators, and they also do not perform well academically.

“So a partnership was established, with South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence also brought into the picture.

“Learners were tested for drugs and a healing programme, headed by the Victim Empowerment Centre, was started for the few learners [who tested] positive.”

The station’s communication officer Constable Thabiso Selowa said that they will continue to conduct searches and safety talks at schools to make sure they are drug-free zones, so learners can refrain from substance abuse and focus on their education.
