Choir fest uplifts youth

Diepsloot – Top judges had their work cut out for them at the annual Diepsloot Choir Competition.

The Riversands Incubation Hub in Fourways welcomed a number of schools from around Gauteng for a choir festival, hosted by non-profit organisation Diepsloot Youth Programme.

The aim of the first annual Diepsloot Choir Competition is to unite and empower children to sing and give them the drive to reach their dreams through music. This was evident as the learners’ voices rang through the halls and corridors of the business hub.

This year the festival included knockout rounds with schools from Olivenhoutbosch, Ivory Park, Cosmo City and Diepsloot. The high school and primary school categories yielded performances of a high quality that all the choirmasters and participants were proud of.

Among the judges was famous Skeem Saam actor, motivational speaker and inspirational leader Phillip Molepo, as well as music director at Stein City Pippa Clegg.

Secondary school winners:

• First place – Diepsloot Secondary School no 1

• Second Place – Ivory Park Secondary School no 1

• Third Place – Leap Science School.

Primary school winners:

• First Place – Akani Metmer School

• Second Place – Diepsloot Primary School no 4

• Third Place – Riversands Primary School.

Diepsloot Youth Programme facilitator Sophy Tlhabadira said, “I’m really impressed with how the competition has improved compared to the past years.”

Tlhabadira added, “The festival was spectacular, better than last year, the competition was tough and I’m glad I wasn’t part of the judging panel.”
