Youth Success Programme to equip learners for the future

MIDRAND – United Way South Africa hosted a programme to help learners prepare for the future.

Non-profit organisation United Way South Africa (UWSA), together with Cummins Africa Middle East, hosted a Youth Success Programme for Grade 9 learners at Ivory Park Secondary School on 11 May.

According to United Way South Africa, the aim of the programme was to prepare learners with the knowledge, experiences, and tools they need to make informed curriculum subject choices, improve their grades and have a better knowledge of the essentials they will need to access higher education institutions and career opportunities.

The organisation added that they frequently host programmes to provide learners with skill assessments as well as a career day at each school to showcase the skills, attitude and aptitude required to become successful in a career. There are also holiday and weekend tuition classes and motivational talks and workshops, particularly to help academically challenged Grade 9 learners to improve.

Ivory Park Secondary School life orientation head of department Pauline Mamabolo said the programme is very beneficial as it advances the learner’s academic performances.

“We usually host it every week and we are also going to award the learners who are participating in the programme to keep them motivated.”

The organisation not only partners with the Cummins Africa Middle East but also with Go Maths to provide extra lessons during holidays and weekends and African Children Feeding Scheme to assist with preparing meals for the learners during those classes.

United Way South Africa also said they believe the quality of an individual’s education has a profound and lasting effect on their ability to succeed in the world and as they are focusing on their modified interventions, they hope to create an enabling learning environment for the learners to ensure their academic success.
