50 network tower batteries stolen, Ivory Park Police arrest suspect

KAALFONTEIN – The Ivory Park police have arrested a 26 year old in possession of stolen cell phone tower batteries.

The Ivory Park police arrested a 26-year-old suspect for the possession of 50 cell phone network tower batteries.

Spokesperson for the Ivory Park Police Station Captain Bernard Matimulane said that the arrest happened in the early hours of 23 May. He added that the arrest was made with the assistance of the security personnel contracted by a well-known cell phone company.

“One of the cell phone companies was able to immediately identify 24 of the batteries as theirs, which were stolen from one of its towers in the Sandringham policing precinct early on Thursday.

“Acting on information, the local police officers and the security personnel proceeded to an address in Kaalfontein, where they found four men offloading the batteries from a double cab van. Upon seeing the police, the suspects fled the scene, but fortunately the police pursued and managed to arrest the 26-year-old man.”

Apart from the batteries, the police recovered a hijacked motor vehicle and also confiscated the vehicle that was being used for the transportation of the batteries.

Matimulane said, “Preliminary information by the detectives revealed that the suspect is already out on R10 000 bail in connection with possession of the same kind of batteries.”

Station commander Brigadier David Mbongeni Ngcobo said, “By giving out the information, the members of the community did themselves and the business community a huge favor, as both business and the community are equally affected by these criminal acts.”

The suspect has been charged with possession of stolen goods and is due to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court soon.
