JOHANNESBURG – Police offer tips on how to be safe when carrying cash.


The South African Police Services have urged people to keep their money safe as they might be targeted by criminals.

The police are calling on residents to guard their personal belongings and avoid making cash deposits or payouts on paydays.

The provided the following tips on how to avoid being targeted by criminals:

ATM safety:

  • Always cover your pin by shielding the hand typing it, even if you are alone at an ATM
  • Never accept help or ask anyone to assist you at the ATM – rather go inside the bank for help.

Online shopping and mobile notifications

  • Register for 3D Secure, otherwise known as verified by Visa or Mastercard SecureCode, before making online purchases with your bank card
  • Be cautious of notifications that you have won any competitions, especially if you did not enter – do not respond with any personal information

Carry cash safely

  • Carry as little cash as possible with you
  • Make use of alternative banking methods such as Internet banking and cell phone banking.
