Mayor says Joburg City is committed to improving infrastructure

JOHANNESBURG – Executive Mayor Herman Mashaba calls on City officials to service the community with pride.

Johannesburg mayor Herman Mashaba has assured Joburg residents that his administration is committed to improving infrastructure in the City. Mashaba was addressing City’s officials at a meeting following his State of the City Address.

The mayor said the City’s main focus is on infrastructure development. He urged City workers to service the community with pride.

“Let us create a culture of service and service with pride. Let’s give back power to the people. We must be accountable to them,” said Mashaba.

“Also, at the same time, we must focus on infrastructure development particularly repairs and maintenance. Look at the closing down of the M2 bridge, over 50 years no repairs and maintenance.”

Mashaba said the focus should be on improving the City’s infrastructures. He added that the City will spend more on maintenance and repairs.

“We focus on changing street names and building names but the infrastructure is collapsing. Since 1994, the previous administration never spent a single cent on repairs and maintenance.

“If you don’t spend money on repairs and maintenance you can imagine what happens to the infrastructure. We need to increase our spending on repairs and maintenance.”

Mashaba also added that the City will focus on growing the economy. He said the economy can only grow in an environment that is safe for business.

“There’s no way you can grow an economy in an environment that is chaotic. Economic growth is linked to public safety. People can only operate and invest in an environment of safety.”
